Essie Mae Shell

Essie Mae (Smith) Shell, age 91, passed away on August 14, 2026, in Edmond, Oklahoma. She was born on May 2, 1935, in Sulphur Springs, Texas to William McKinley and Elgie Lou (McManus) Smith.

Essie graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in May 1951, shortly after turning 16. That same month, she began what would become a remarkable career with Southwestern Bell. Through her hard work, determination, and talent, Essie went on to become one of the first female executives at AT&T, an accomplishment that made her a true trailblazer for women in the workplace. One of the major long-term projects of her career with Southwestern Bell and AT&T was her work with the Yellow Pages. Later in life, she worked at Anderson-Clayton Brothers Funeral Home in Kemp, Texas.

Essie was fun-loving, quick-witted, and always ready for an adventure. She was known for her beautiful smile, which reflected the warmth and personality she shared with those around her. She enjoyed spending time at garage sales and had a special love for collecting Elvis memorabilia. Some of her happiest memories included attending Narvel Felts concerts and Elvis impersonator shows. Essie was also a proud Texan through and through, with a deep love for the Lone Star State. A faithful Texas Longhorns fan, she proudly cheered on her Longhorns and never missed an opportunity to show her Texas pride. Those who knew Essie will remember a woman who enjoyed life, loved an adventure, and brought plenty of personality—and that unforgettable smile—along for the ride.

Among Essie’s proudest accomplishments was the path she helped forge for women in the workplace, but her greatest pride came from her family. She treasured being a mother to her son, Alan, a stepmother to Alan’s six brothers, and a grandmother to Alason and Anna.

Essie is survived by her granddaughters, Alason Sar and husband Brendan of Magna, Utah, and Anna Payne of Dallas, Texas; her stepsons; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.

Essie is preceded in death by her parents, William and Elgie Smith; her husband, Joe Shell; her son, Alan Wade Payne; her brothers, William “Bill” McKinley Smith and wife Jean, and Ben Mynard Smith and wife Rose Jean.
