Gunner Dean Royal, born on July 22, 2000, in Dallas, Texas, to parents David Wade Royal and Jamie Ladean Edwards left this world far too soon on May 4, 2025, in Athens, Texas.
Gunner was a beacon of light, a rugged spirit and gentle heart that defined the best of what it means to be a ghetto cowboy. He is remembered by all who were fortunate enough to cross his path. In his vibrant 24 years, Gunner created a great deal of memories centered around his family and friends. His love for Johnny Cash echoed through the generations, reflecting both the simplicity and complexity of his soul. Gunner loved spending his time playing video games and being with his family. He embraced life head on, being certain to live every moment as if it was his last. His adventurous spirit and tough exterior concealed a gentle nature that resonated throughout his family. He wasn’t one for rules, and he sure as hell didn’t care for fences—literal or otherwise. Gunner lived on the edge, where danger danced and the whiskey burned. A man of few words but many scars, he wore each one like a badge of honor.
As we gather to honor his memory, family and friends will come together at Anderson-Clayton Bros. Funeral Home in Kemp, Texas, on May 17, 2025. The day will begin with a visitation from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, followed by a heartfelt funeral service commencing at 2:00 PM. This will be a time to reflect on the joy Gunner brought into all our lives, a celebration of a well-lived life, albeit too short.
Gunner is preceded in death by his father, David Wade Royal; brother, Dillon Royal; grandfather, Paul Edwards; and his uncle, Doeboy. Gunner is survived by his mother, Jamie Ladean Edwards; siblings, Harley Royal, Alesha Herrera, Brittany Royal, and Cassidy Royal; grandmother, Debra Jo Edwards; uncle, "Boom Boom" best friends, Lyndee Jo Smith, Dominick Carano, Abel Cerveny, and Caleb Clark; several nieces, nephews, cousins including Adam White, Colby Livingston; and many extended friends and family.
Though he may have left this earthly realm, Gunner Dean Royal’s spirit will continue to inspire and touch the lives of many. His legacy will forever remain in our hearts. As we say goodbye, we are reminded That Gunner is one of Gods many chosen Spiritual Soldiers and was sent to do what he was destined to do.
