Lilly Mae Bates

Lilly Mae Bates, age 86, passed away peacefully on April 4, 2026, in Athens, Texas.

She was born on July 17, 1939, in San Saba, Texas, to her parents, Russell Henry  and Ozell Thelma (Bolinger) Deaver. Lilly lived a life centered on love, family, and simple joys. She was a devoted homemaker who took great pride in caring for her family. Lilly also shared her passion for cooking while working at a barbecue restaurant in San Saba, Texas,  where her meals brought comfort and happiness to many.

Lilly found joy in life’s quiet moments—especially fishing and spending time with those she loved most. Her warmth, strength, and nurturing spirit will be remembered by all who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Bates; her sons, John Michael Grubbs and Keith Wessdon Grubbs; her parents; and six siblings.

She is survived by her sons, Terry Grubbs and his wife Rene of Kemp, Texas, and Mark Grubbs and his wife Ruth of Quinlan, Texas, along with multiple grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and numerous other family members.

Lilly Mae Bates will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by her family and friends.
